Last week, a special couple climbed Mt. Audubon. They were 74 years old, and they were climbing this 13,000’ peak to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
I learned their story while talking to their son on the summit. The bride and groom were still struggling upwards.
When I later saw the husband, carefully picking his way up the rocks on a different route from his wife, I congratulated him both on the occasion on and their choice of celebration.
“Thanks,” he said, obviously pleased. “Yes, today is the big day. We’ve been planning this for a long time.” He wished me a good hike, then continued his slow journey up to meet his wife.
What a great moment for them—to celebrate five decades of marriage by standing together on that sun-washed summit, the peaks and valleys of the Rockies, and most likely of their many years together, there at their feet. Cheers to them!
